Zaanse Schans Historic Windmills

These windmills here are functioning, working machines. They have been relocated here from other locations around Holland. The one that I entered was used for grinding grain. Cogs and wheels were spinning everywhere, but the grinding stone was still. Debby and Vera did not go into the windmill because of the stairs.

From inside, they could slow and stop the blades. They could also change the direction that the blades were facing to take full advantage of the wind.

Historically, these windmills would have been used to pump water, but water control was eventually done with steam-powered pumps, making the windmills obsolete. Gas-powered pumps eventually took over but now the task is very computer-controlled and electrically driven. Modern methods came about because of a massive flood in 1953 in which thousands of people died. Today Dutch engineers consulted with New Orleans to help in their flood planning.

Something is happening because the wheels are spinning.

The grinding wheel is still and silent. Notice the operator is actually wearing wooden shoes.

This row of windmills would be appropriate as the lowlands were pumped out.
