Lamego

A bus ride took us from the river to the city of Lamego. Here we found the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies. This sanctuary is at the top of a very long set of stairs. Pilgrims seeking healing climb the 686 steps from the town seeking healing. We did not climb up the stairs, instead getting the bus to drop us off at the top. After a quick tour of the sanctuary itself, Deb took the bus back down to the town and I walked down the steps to meet her.

The Entry Into the Sanctuary Itself.

Just below the sanctuary is the Courtyard of Kings.

After the first set of stairs, the first of several tiled murals becomes visible.

From the bottom, you get a sense of the grandeur.

A church in the town is of the gothic style. The columns are plain, but behind
the altar and on the ceilings are incredible decorations. This reflects the belief
that the place of great beauty is heaven itself.

Back on the river my camera was drawn to this ruined estate.
