The Douro River

Porto is famous for its wines (primarily ports) and the Douro River is famous for its Vineyards (Quintas).

There are five locks which we will pass through on this trip. This one (the second) is the largest at 35 metres. Several people felt a need to be on the sundeck as we approached

Deb was feeling at home on the deck.

It is more like going into a tunnel than a lock.

Our entire ship was swallowed by a giant.

There was less than two feet of space on each side as well as fore and aft.

The helm and conning tower were lowered so we could fit under the bridge.
As we entered the lock, a crew member stood on each side with a walkie-talkie, guiding the captain. When exiting the lock, the captain left the bridge and manned a second set of controls on the starboard side of the ship.
The entire superstructure was raised as soon as it cleared the bridge.

This and the next five shots show some of the many wineries that are cut into the hillsides.

From time to time we would pass a little tourist boat puttering along.
