Bikes

Bikes in the Netherlands are everywhere. There are separate bike lanes on most main streets. There are traffic lights that are just for bikes. There is no rule abouthelmets, so very few people wear helmets. Every guide warns you to watch for bikes because they move quickly and they are adept at dodging pedestrian traffic (usually).

This is what they call a granny bike. There are many of these everywhere. They have only one gear and most have a basket at the front. Considering that the Netherlands are extremely flat, these bikes make sense.

The primary use for these bikes is to carry children. At the end of a school day, many of these are lined up to take these home.

Fancifully decorated bikes are quite common.

Granny bike with attitude.

This one is actually advertizing.

I watched a lady coming out of a market in Rotterdam. She had been shopping so she had several bags which were tucked into the front of the carrier. Her young child was then belted into the back of the carrier. She folded the baby carriage and placed in on top of her bags. She then climbed on and drove away.

Two wheels at the front might be more stable, but they are definitely not as maneuverable.

If I could find one of these, I would buy it in a minute. I have seen them carrying children, adults and dogs. They look like they are incredibly easy to maneuver.
