Kapama Seven

Well, this is the end. It is our last morning at Kapama Wildlife Preserve. We’ve pretty well seen everything there is to see (well, no cheetah). The guide and the tracker don’t really have to identify the animals anymore. Instead they point to an animal and expect us to identify it.

It must now be time for us to get into the picture.

On the way back to camp the guide went to check up on last night’s lion. He found this male laying on his side in utter exhaustion. His belly was hugely extended and his breathing was fast and deep. This predator was completely sated and it was clear that he was not going to move again for some time. The body of the water buffalo had been pulled under some very thick foliage so that it was invisible to the vultures. Most of the belly was missing and the flies were congregating.

In the end, today is a travel day. We checked out and were driven to the airport. Tonight is in the airport hotel in Johannesburg.
