Grand Pré

Grand Pré is a national historic park. Here was the centre of the Acadian culture. Mutch like the Dutch, the Acadians used dykes to reclaim land from the sea. This resulted in some of the most fertile land around. The were farmers and they were traders and they thrived.

Originally the Acadians were French colonists. They developed their own culture and became something different. When the French and the English fought (as they often did), the Acadians remained neutral. After the English captured Nova Scotia, the Acadians were accused of sympathizing with the French. Some may have picked up arms to help the French. Perhaps some were forced.

The English decided to expel the Acadians from Nova Scotia. They were deported to other English colonies. The story is very long and very painful. They ended up scattered far and wide, but some did make it back home eventually.

Evangeline was a fictional heroine in a Longfellow poem.
The poem brought the plight of the Acadians to the attention of the world.

Hurricane Dorian was here.
